JOURNAL #5 Name_____________ The Relationship Of Music And Dance “Choreographer Merce Cunningham and long-time collaborator and composer John Cage were adamant that the music and the dance be separate entities, that no relationship necessarily exists between the two. In fact, there were occasions when Cunningham’s dancers would perform even though they had never heard the musical accompaniment. This innovation was a radical departure from centuries of dance history in which all concert dances were choreographed t music. Cunningham’s contribution to the choreographic process changed the course of dance history and challenged choreographers to work with the element of time with a new kind of integrity” (Schraeder, p.66). “[Doris] Humphrey (1987) advises that a dance should not mimic or parrot musical structure, but that the music should be a sympathetic mate, not a master of the dance” (Minton, 1986). Ted Shawn and Ruth St Denis set up the Denishawn School of Dance.
