Traditional Short Stories Proverbs Discussion In the Novel Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt, Jethro needs wisdom and encouraging words. Jethro's brothers, cousin, and best friend join the war leaving Jethro to wrestle with the physical, social, and emotional challenges of the war. Jethro worries for their lives and has to take over the responsibilities they left behind. His father has a heart attack, which leaves him, in the absence of his older brothers, as the man of the house. Biblical Proverbs: "A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." I chose the line because Jethro could've had a bad attitude about his family running off and decided not to step up to the plate because his brother left but instead he decided to mature and take care of the rest of the family and his responsibilities. Anyone could say that Jethro's life is pretty difficult but he never gets angry for the way he lives instead he sorta embraces it a little because being angry all the time comes with its negative consequences. Chinese Proverbs: "A Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" Jethro is continuously growing and learning in the book and he is always facing new obstacles and hurtles so this could just be a reminder that to get far in life you have to fist start out with little steps
