International Relations Prof. Schuster War Is A Force That Gives Us Meaning by Chris Hedges Chris Hedges is a prolific journalist with a respectable resumé notably due to his extensive experience in many unfavorable situations of war. In his book entitled “War Is A Force That Gives Us Meaning” he melds his own personal experiences on the battlefield with his theories and perception to give a very thoughtful view of war and its effects. A major concept, which Hedges outlines in his book, is the theory of “The Myth of War” and how it correlates to the reality of war. The myth of war refers to the lies and deceit that are inherent to the justification of war. It touches on aspects such as propaganda and the insecurities of ordinary people that are exploited in order to encourage their support of war. These assertions can be applied to the current war on Iraq in which, following the September 11 th 2001 attacks on the United States, President Bush was able to use the emotions of the US citizens in order to gain unanimous approval for his invasion on Afghanistan and subsequently Iraq.
