Victoria Mascari Prof. Skafidas Group #3 COMLIT 101W Who is Herodotus? Herodotus was a Greek historian, born in Halicarnassus, Caria, now known as Bodrum, Turkey. A contemporary of Socrates, he lived during the fifth century BC (484 – 425 BC). Herodotus came from a wealthy Grrek-Carian merchant family, who opposed the tyrant Lygdamis. Due to this opposition Herodotus and his family were sent to exile on the island of Samos. Herodotus returned to Halicarnassus as a young man to fight with the anti- Persian rebellion, but after that he never returned to his home city again ("Herodotus."). Little is known about Herodotus’ personal life other than he was a great traveler, he travelled the Persian Empire: Egypt, Aswan, Libya, Syria, Babylonia, and Susa. He also traveled to Byzantium, Thrace, and Macedonia and along the shores of the Black Sea to the Don River. Herodotus had a great interest in cultural customs and the histories and current events of the different cultures around the world ("Herodotus.").
