Explain at least two problems with, and the Aristotelian Alternative to, Plato’s metaphysics of form. Plato’s metaphysics of form - The cave analogy – our situation in the world - Once we escape the cave we are in the realm of forms (pure and real world) - The sun is representative of the good - Sense objects such as plants and animals are forms - The cave is where we are currently trapped, the physical world - Shadows represent physical objects - People who cant think in the realm of forms such as us are prisoners Aristotle’s Critique of Plato’s Doctrine of the Form - The third man (likeness) o There’s a commonality between form in the realm of forms and those in the physical world o Form is inside things o Leads to exasperation, could go on forever if all forms have things in common - Participation o If there is full participation in each object there can only be one of something in the world o If there is form in everything and the form must be divided up into many
