If you better understand the nature and power of language, if you attend to your use of language and work to use words with forethought and skill, you can exert great influence and enhance your relationships. b. Language is not used involuntarily. You choose the language you use—even if you make that choice in the split second it takes your brain to select a symbol. 2. The Nature of Language a. Introduction i. Ordering, classifying, manipulating ii. Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis: human language and thought are so interrelated that thought is actually rooted in and controlled by language b. People Use Words as Symbols i. Symbols trigger thoughts, concepts, or feelings c. People Attach Meaning to Words i. The meaning of the word is a person’s interpretation of that symbol. ii. Bypassing is a communication problem that arises when the same words mean different things to different people. d. People Create Denotative and Connotative Meanings for Words
