Amber Abbott Marcella Remund ENGL 210 January 22, 2008 Response #1 May He Rest in Peace The depths of the catacombs where Montresor lures Fortunato in “The Cask of Amontillado” are a dark and scary place. It was there that Montresor lead the curious Fortunato to his fated death. Why would Fortunato leave the festivities of the carnival to spend time with Montresor? Montresor is angry at Fortunato for insulting him during some previous occasion. Montresor takes advantage of Fortunato’s pride in his wine connoisseurship and offers him to look at some Amontillado (a type of fine wine) that he has stowed away in his vaults. It is in this way that Montresor deceives Fortunato and ultimately gets his revenge. The setting of the carnival and the clothes that Fortunato wears, contrast with the dark and musty catacombs where Montresor manages to lead him. Fortunato is dressed in traditional carnival clothes including a cone-shaped hat and bells. In the beginning of “The Cask of Amontillado” Fortunato has
