8810 Essay Topic #1 When we think of women’s rights today, most of us understand that all people should be treated equal. Therefore men and women’s rights should also be equal. When Kate Chopin was writing in the 1800’s the roles of women were extremely different than what their roles are today. Women in her era had this preconceived role in society consisting of things like staying home and taking care of the children, cleaning, making dinner, and making sure the husband was always comfortable. For most women during this time, this lifestyle was everyday life. Through Kate Chopin’s short stories like The Story of an Hour , The Unexpected , and The Kiss it is clear that she wanted to start a revolution of getting the housewife mindset to change into the wife who had something important to say, and an intelligent way to go about saying it. The first story I read by Chopin was titled The Story of an Hour . Ms. Mallard is a housewife who comes to realize that her husband was killed in a mining accident. In the third paragraph the narrator says, “She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance.” This quote tells the reader in a subtle way that Ms. Mallard will not be grieving for her husband.
