Peck 1Erica PeckDawn DimarzoCHFD2205/20/2016Sexual ToleranceRobert Green Ingersoll, Civil War veteran and political leader once stated “Tolerance is giving to every other human being every right that you claim for yourself”. Basic human rights seems like it would be a second nature concept. Children are raised to treat others as they themselves want to be treated. So why as they grow up do individuals develop the preconceived notions of what is right and wrong when it comes to sexual identity? Regardless of a person gender identity it should not lead to discrimination. There is ample documentation regarding the torture, abuse and unfair treatment of those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT); yet they continue to be ostracized. News coverage continues to show teens bullied for years forcing them to feel like such an outcast. Sadly for some, they see the only way out is suicide. Children committing suicide because they feel unwanted and are told they are either wrong or going to because of they cannot help but feel. The laws advocates continue to fight for are ones based on providing dignity to all humans. It is astonishing that there are still 80 countries including 12 states in the United States that have Anti-LGBT laws, 7 of which are punishable by death.1Nigeria is one country which still practices Sharia law. In Nigeria, consensual same-sex conduct or even the discussion of LBGT activity is punishable by death. 1 See Chart after references-
