Sean Chapin Writing 1122 February 3, 2008 Letter to the Editor Hello, to start, I wanted to let you know that I agree 100% with you, that the death penalty is bad , and people need to realize nothing good comes out of it. You made good arguments, in the fact that it is still very cruel and inhumane, and that the process is far from painless. Your editorial would have been much more persuasive, if more factual information was included, especially on the financial side. For example, according to the Death Penalty Information Center, it is always more expensive to have someone on death row, than it is to keep them in maximum-security prison for life, by quite a number actually. It is over $114 million a year to keep someone on death row, rather than locked up in maximum security for life. It costs the state roughly $250 million per execution, and the taxpayers are paying for all of this, its just outrageous (Human Rights Watch).

Unformatted text preview: This information would be crucial, and a lot more persuasive. It just displays another reason why it is illogical for us to sentence someone to death, when we are the ones we have to pay for it. Information, like the fact that the death penalty was first used using hanging and firing squads, which is extremely inhumane. Also, the fact that over 1,000 people have been executed by our own US Government, by means of the death penalty, and over 3,000 still await on death row, would be very convincing to your article, and would help display your purpose much, much more (Amnesty International USA). More than 3,000 people are currently on death row, and keeping them on there is much more expensive than keeping them in prison for life (DPIC).
