Sociology Chapter 1 Notes August 31, 2006 Sociological perspective stresses the social contexts in which people live. How groups influence people How people are influenced by their society, a group of people who share a culture and territory. Social location – the corners in life that people occupy because of where they are located in society. How jobs, income, education, gender, age and race affect people’s ideas and behavior. Each society has specific characteristics o Ideas of the proper roles of men and women People don’t do what they do because of inherited internal mechanisms, such as instincts, but rather our experiences Why does war exit, why are some people more powerful, why are some rich and others poor? o Often based answers on myth and superstition Sociology appeared in the mid 1800’s when social observers began to use scientific ideas to test their ideas. Sociology grew out of upheaval – Industrial Revolution Successes of American and French Revolutions encouraged people to rethink social life New ideals – conviction that individuals possess inalienable rights. Scientific method was being tried out in chemistry and physics. Positivism – the idea of applying scientific method to social world First proposed by Auguste Comte (1798-1857) What holds society together? Comte called the new science Sociology – the study of society Armchair philosophy – Drawing conclusions from informal observations of social life. He did not do research, and his conclusions have been abandoned. However, because he coined the term, he is often credited with being the founder
