Literary Design Casper with Edwards pgs. 31-64 Poetics Aristotle, 350 BC - Structure of the plot using poetry as example - Three differences which distinguish artistic imitation: medium, the objects, the manner or mode of  imitation The imitation is produced by rhythm, language, or ‘harmony’ In prose or verse – imitation by means of language alone Rhythm, tune, meter [II] Comedy represents men as worse; tragedy represents men as better in actual life [III] When medium and objects are the same, poet may imitate by narration May speak in own voice or take on another personality [IV] Poetry came from two causes  (1) Imitation is instinct of human nature o How man learned earliest lessons (2) Instinct for ‘harmony’ and rhythm Iambic or lampooning measure – used with satirical poems (Homer) Tragedy (and comedy) were at first mere improvisation; changes were made

o Aeschylus introduced second actor and importance of Chorus o Sophocles had three actors, added scene-painting o Short plot discarded in place of greater compass o Earlier satiric form discarded for stately manner of Tragedy o Iambic measure replaced the trochaic tetrameter Trochaic tetrameter used when poetry was satirical and was for dancing Dialogue   iambic  Iambic felt most like colloquial speech o Additions to number of acts or ‘episodes’ [V] Epic poetry is like Tragedy in that its characters are an imitation of a higher type, but Epic poetry
