08/31/06  [Discussion] LITERARY DESIGN - Literary design is the way a story is told using film * Bordell p. 68 – 102 - Story - Plot - explicitly presented material,  Includes nondiegetic images and sounds o Diegesis – the film world o i.e. Soundtrack is nondiegetic to  Mystic River  but helps establish mood, etc. - Narrator – specific agent who tells the story Doesn’t have to be personified human or be explicitly shown May be diegetic or nondiegetic - Narrative – chain of events that are linked via causality and time The “what” - Narration – the technique of presenting the information The “how” Distribution of story information Presentation of plot - Keep track of what we know in comparison to the characters on screen
