1 Lecture 4 The Purpose of Theology What is Theology? Mr. Osborne? May I be excused? My brain is full. NO It is not an airtight system to be mastered. NO It is not facts and jargon stuffed in your brain. YES It is a joint quest for God and His gifts. The Purpose of Theology Sapientia • Theology as the pursuit of “wisdom” for spirituality “Make your ear attentive to wisdom,incline your heart to understanding; for if you cry for discernment,lift your voice for understanding; if you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will discern the fear of the LORD and discover the knowledge of God.” Prov. 2:2-5 Scientia • Theology as the pursuit of “knowledge” for truth • Orthopraxis • Theology as the pursuit of “right practice” for living Orthodoxy: Wisdom, Knowledge, and Practice Combined Orthodoxy is “right belief”: staying on the road and avoiding the wasteland of error. Being orthodox means accepting the biblical faith of the Church through the ages. Orthodoxy combines sapientia , scientia , and orthopraxis. How Wide is “Orthodoxy”? God the Creator Trinity Christ as God and Man Virgin Birth Resurrection Sinfulness of Man Salvation by grace & faith Formation of the church Authority of Scripture Return of Christ Final judgment Dispensationalism v. Covenant Theology Views of Creation Calvinism v. Arminianism
