1 Lecture 12 The Present and Future Work of Christ The Present Work of Christ “In the doctrinal deliberations of the church, the subject of the present work of Christ has been largely overshadowed by such important doctrines as the incarnation, death and resurrection of Christ.” (Walvoord, Jesus Christ Our Lord , 219) OUT TO LUNCH NO! Jesus is not “Out to Lunch” right now. He is still active in the lives of believers , in the church , and in the world ! The Present Work of Christ The present work of Christ began at the Ascension, when He promised to return. …He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them. They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.” Acts 1:9-11; cf. John 14:1-3 1. Ascension: Promise to the Church The Present Work of Christ “You have ascended on high, You have led captive Your captives; You have received gifts among men.” Ps. 68:18; quoted in Eph. 4:8 “For David did not ascend into heaven, but he himself says, ‘The LORD says to my Lord: ‘Sit at My right hand…’” Acts 2:34, quoting Psalm 110:1 1. A Promise to His church The Ascension was not an afterthought! It was predicted in the OT The Present Work of Christ “Therefore Jesus said, ‘For a little while longer I am with you, then I go to Him who sent Me.’” John 7:33 “…I go to the Father.” John 14:12 “You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.” John 14:28 1. A Promise to His church The Ascension was not an afterthought! It was predicted in the OT and by Jesus. The Present Work of Christ 1. A Promise to His church The Ascension (like the Resurrection) was: ° an actual historical event ° a bodily event ° a unique event The Ascension marked a transition: Humiliation Exaltation Ascension

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
