1 Lecture 13: The Offices of Christ Prophet Priest King Christ the Prophet Theologically speaking, what is a prophet? NO Not the leader of an apocalyptic sect or religious movement. NO Not a person who magically foretells the future. YES A person who speaks on behalf of God. Christ’s Fulfillment of the Office of Prophet “I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world…When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.” John 8:26-28 “For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. "I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me.” John 12:49-50 1. He claimed to bring the Father’s message. Christ’s Fulfillment of the Office of Prophet From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17 Also note: The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) The Upper Room Discourse (John 14-17) 2. He proclaimed the message to crowds and to his disciples. Christ’s Fulfillment of the Office of Prophet When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it, saying… “(T)he days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.” Luke 19:41-44 3. He foretold future events. This prophecy was fulfilled by the Romans in AD 70. Spoils from the Jewish Temple carried in triumphal procession, Arch of Titus Christ’s Fulfillment of the Office of Prophet “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.” John 16:12-15 4. He continues this office by the ministry of the Spirit through the Word.
