The Church’s Mission Field Anthropology The Origin of Man The Image of God in Man Lecture 14 The Origin of Man “The biblical record alone gives us accurate information about the origin of mankind.” (Ryrie, Basic Theology , p. 216) God’s Creation of Adam • It was direct . – It was the personal act of God apart from any evolutionary processes between kinds. • It was immediate . – He did not use a previous life form (animal or prehuman). “God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27 God’s “Special Creation” of Adam Not like this … but like this! The Material and Immaterial Components of Man Material : God created Adam’s body from the “dust,” and Eve from Adam’s “rib.” This means they were made of real, physical substances such as carbon, water, etc. “Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” Gen. 2:7 “So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.” Gen. 2:21-22 The Material and Immaterial Components of Man

2 The Material and Immaterial Components of Man Immaterial : God created Man in his “image.” This means he endowed Man with intellectual , spiritual , and personal capacities. Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
