1 Cor 15:39 ! ! # 3 2 4 "For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh," Romans 7:18 "For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another," Gal. 5:17 "[God] condemned sin in the flesh. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so," Rom 8:3, 6-7 This view suggests a person's soul existed prior to conception. Plato taught that the soul existed before birth and continues beyond death. But Aristotle thought the soul perished at death. Hinduism teaches reincarnation: a soul moves through various incarnations. The Christian writer Origen (d. 254) thought souls were created prior to the Fall, and came to be embodied as a result of the Fall. Pre-existence is not taught in the Bible. PreExistent Souls An existing soul takes up residence in a new body The Transmission of the Immaterial: Pre-Existence Pre- This view suggests that at the time of human conception, God creates a new soul and unites it to the body. The view was held by Charles Hodge (d. 1878). He noted that God is called "God/Father of spirits." Num. 16:22, Heb. 12:9 He asked, "How can the material body produce an immaterial soul?" The Transmission of the Immaterial: Creationism Creationism does not accord well with the biblical truths that: God finished his creative work on the seventh day Humans are born with original sin New soul created A new soul is added to the new human life 3 This view suggests that the immaterial aspect of a human being is generated by the parents just like the body. Was first articulated by the Christian writer Tertullian (ca. 200). It was held more recently by W.G.T. Shedd (d. 1894). "Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me." Psalm 51:5; cf. Romans 5:12 "For [Levi] was still in the loins of his father Abraham when Melchizedek met him." Hebrews 7:10 The Transmission of the Immaterial: Traducianism This soul is transmitted through human reproduction. SOUL 4 ...
