1 D. The Church’s Friends and Foes Angels and Demons Lecture 28 What Are Angels? NO Angels are not cute and cuddly. NO Angels are not roaming about on earth doing random good deeds. NO Angels are not depicted in female form in Scripture. What Are Angels? NO Angels are not necessarily winged. NO Angels do not serve as individual spirit guides. YES Angels are spiritual beings sent as messengers from God. Facts About Angels Hebrew malak , Greek angelos = “messenger” They are higher than men. When Christ was incarnate as a Man, he was “lower than the angels.” Heb. 2:7-9 They are personal spirit beings. Immortal (Luke 20:36) Do not procreate (Mt. 22:30) Do not have physical bodies (Heb. 1:14) Facts About Angels They were created good. “For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.” Col. 1:16 “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” Gen. 1:31 Many fell into evil with Satan. “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned , but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment…” 2 Pet. 2:4 Their number is “myriad.” Myriad = a number too high to be counted “The Fall of the Rebel Angels,” 1558 Classification of Angels There are elect and fallen angels. I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels …” 1 Tim. 5:21 "Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels .” Mt. 25:41 Ranks of the Angels Michael the Archangel Chief Princes (Dan. 10:13); Gabriel? Cherubim: protect God’s holiness Seraphim: praise God and attend his throne Powers, authorities, thrones, dominions Lucifer leads the fallen angels out of heaven.
