The Church's Hope: Eschatology Dispensational Eschatology: An Overview of the End Times Lecture 34 NO Not to frustrate us in Bible study, or to confuse us about His truth. NO Not so that every detail of modern life can be read into some grand prophetic scheme. YES So that, by the help of His Spirit, we might know the truth and confidently face the future. Eschatology is not about the abstract future, but about us, now, moving into the future! Some Rules for Interpretation Interpret literally. But note: this means figurative language should be understood figuratively. Two Perspectives Dispensational Theology Israel and the Church are distinct. The prophecies to Israel belong to Israel and must be fulfilled literally. For example: Christ will reign as King in Jerusalem Compare the Word with itself. Recognize that there may be time intervals and double references. Prophecies spoken in a "near" context may not be fulfilled until much later. The promises to Israel are not given to the Church. Covenant Theology The Church is the New Israel. Prophecies to Israel are spiritually fulfilled in and by the Church. For example: Christ spiritually "reigns" in our hearts as Christians Overview: The Rapture Greek harpazo, Latin raptus, to seize, snatch, catch up In the Rapture, Christians are caught up in the clouds to be with Jesus forever. Overview: The Tribulation A seven-year future period in which God pours out his wrath on the wicked, and prepares Israel for Messiah's return. It completes the 70 seven-year periods of Daniel 9. ! " # Dan. 9:24 1 Thess. 4:17 69 `weeks' have already taken place from Daniel until Christ; only the seventieth week is still to come. The wrath of God will be poured out in the Tribulation.
