1 The Millennium Lecture 36 Does Your View of the Millennium Really Matter? Look at that cute guy over there! I sure hope he’s a pre- millennialist! • Perhaps you think your view of . . the Millennium is inconsequential. • While it might not affect your dating choices, it’s actually a very important viewpoint! • It affects our worldview: – Are we to bring in Christ’s kingdom? – Is the world getting better or worse? • It affects our biblical interpretation: – Are OT promises to be taken literally, or spiritually fulfilled in the Church? – What is the status of Israel today? Definition of the Millennium “Millennium” means “1,000 years” Mille = “thousand” and annus = “year” The idea of a future golden age in which the Messiah reigns is found in numerous OT passages, such as Isaiah, Ezekiel and Zechariah. The specific duration comes from Rev. 20, which tells us six times that the reign of Christ will be for 1,000 years. “The repetition of this figure underscores both its literalness and its importance.” Ryrie, BT , 592 The Church Views of the Millennium: Amillennialism Amillennialists do not deny a millennium. For them, it is not a literal 1000-year reign on earth. Rev. 20 speaks of deceased believers reigning in heaven with Christ. OR: Christ now reigns in the Church. So the Kingdom is spiritual, not earthly and political. Return of Christ Spiritual reign in the hearts of believers Views of the Millennium: Amillennialism Some Important Features and Implications : The Church is the New Israel, so Israel’s promised Kingdom is now the Church’s. “1,000 years” of Rev. 20 is symbolic
