CHAPTER 9 NOTES RACE AND ETHNIC CLASSIFICATION (Emphasis on United States) 1. The U.S. System of Racial Classification a. The Shortcomings of Assigning People to Clear-Cut Racial Categories b. Other Shortcomings Associated with the U.S. System of Racial Classification 2. The U.S. System of Ethnic Classification a. Hispanic vs. non-Hispanic and blacks vs. mulattos 3. Chance, Context, and Choice i. Chance = those factors not subject to human will, choice, or effort that determine racial and/or ethnic classification. ii. Context = the larger social setting in which racial and ethnic categories are recognized, constructed, and challenged. iii. Choice = the act of choosing from a range of possible behaviors or appearances such that the resulting actions evoke associations with a particular race or ethnic group. b. Race as a Product of Chance, Context, and Choice i. Race is based more upon physical appearance than biological history. c. Ethnicity as a Product of Chance, Context, and Choice i. Ethnicity = People who share a national origin; a common ancestry; a place of birth; distinctive and visible social traits; or socially important physical characteristics such as skin color, hair texture, and/or physical build. ii. Selective forgetting = a process whereby people choose to recognize only some of their ancestries and to forget and discount others. iii. Involuntary ethnicity = In this situation, a dominant group defines some subgroup of people in racial and ethnic terms, thus forcing that subgroup to become, appear, and/or feel more ethnic than they might
