In the movie Crash, viewers are given an insight to various characters of different
ethnic backgrounds. Throughout the film, individuals are portrayed as flawless but these
immaculate characters are then put in situations which force the person watching the film
to question what he or she initially thought was true about the moral character of the
individuals in the film. One example of a character that appears to be but has his
character questioned at the end of the movie is Police Officer Tom Hansen. By analyzing
at the film
Crash
, one is able to see the development of the character of Tom Hansen
through examining the stereotypical views he has, how he reacts to the stereotype, and
the reasons for his behavior
At the beginning of the movie Crash, Tom Hansen is portrayed as a young rookie
police officer who is unbiased and willing to enforce the law without allowing the
civilian’s race to influence his enforcement of the law. The first instance where Officer
Hansen is thrust into a race based situation is seen through the scene where Cameron and
Christine are pulled over by Officers Ryan and Hansen. Moments before Cameron and
Christine are pulled over by Officer Ryan and Officer Hansen, an African American
individual denies officer Ryan’s father medical treatment. After this, a call comes in from
dispatch that there is a stolen car driven by African American individuals. When officer
