1Juliette LeBlancProfessor EstradaEnglish 1C15 April 2022Essay 1In the short story “Hills like White Elephants”, written by Ernest Hemingway, thecharacters are set at a train station in order to highlight the relationship between the twocharacters. The relationship between the girl and the boy is that they are at ‘crossroads’. Whilethere are many forms of symbolism in this story, the setting of the train station has manymeanings behind these two characters and where they are in the stage of their relationship at themoment. The train station is a symbol of their relationship.The train station symbolizes the stop these two characters are at in the relationshipbetween each other. It shows two sides of the station, one side being dry, with a dead landscape,while the other side is green, and beautiful. “The girl stood up and walked to the end of thestation. Across, on the other side, were fields of grain and trees along the banks of Ebro. Faraway, beyond the river, were mountains” (page 231). One side representing the action of theabortion, while the other side is representing the idea of a beautiful life, a fresh, new beginning.The tracks also have a significant meaning behind the train station symbolism. The tracksrepresent what path the couple is going to take. They represent two different arrivals. In this case,whether they are going to go on with each other and continue their relationship.
