1 News of the day… • About half of the solar energy that reaches us is in the form of visible light, the other half is infrared light • Current solar panels are only able to convert the only able to convert the visible portion of light to electricity, leaving a huge energy resource untapped • At least until now… News of the day… • Using quantum dots combined with a common polymer, University of Toronto engineers have developed a plastic coating that can convert infrared light into electricity • This coating is very flexible and can be applied to almost anything from roof tops to cars and even almost anything, from roof tops to cars and even clothing. (Imagine if your shirt charged your cell phone) • By harnessing infrared light, the solar coating is even able to create electricity when it is cloudy. • Currently, it is believed that the solar coating could allow up to 30% of solar energy to be converted to electricity, compared to 6% in today’s best solar panels President Bush Launches the Hydrogen Initiative "Tonight I am proposing $1.2 billion in research funding so that America can lead the world in developing clean, hydrogen- powered automobiles. "A simple chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen generates energy, which can be used to power a car producing only water, not exhaust fumes. !""# %&’&( )* &+( ,-.)- /001(22 3’-4’15 !67 !""# The Hydrogen Economy Basic Concept: Use hydrogen as a fuel, and fuel cells to generate electricity or to power vehicles. •Fuel cells are much more efficient than combustion engines •Hydrogen can be produced anywhere; less Hydrogen can be produced anywhere; less dependence on foreign oil •Fuel cells produce only water as exhaust, no air pollution. •Water is a Greenhouse gas, but if the hydrogen gas is produced from the electolysis of water, there is no net water production in the cycle.
