LAH 4602 Notes Week of August 23 Earth and Water Earth: Amazonia in South America A. Tropical Lowlands B. Highlands C. Origins Water: The River , Sea and its Tributaries A. The Scope of Amazonia B. Main Tributaries C. Seasons Some Vocabulary: Campina forest- low fertility Varzea*- rainforest/ floodplain Campo-savanna Cerrado- gallery forest/ more confined to the water Tierra/ terra firma- “solid land” land higher that flood plain White water- rivers with rich sediment / comes from the Andes Black water- do not contain rich sediment Clear water- carry nothing Amazonia- “large river” - lowlands framed by highlands (tropical) - starts with the Andes mountains lowlands- low fertility forest- campina forest the highlands frame it - these are the Brazilian highlands south of the Amazon (aka Brazilian shield) The Andes mountains are much newer- so they bring a lot of good soil to the tributaries which have their origin here There used to be a sea running through SA, but the Andes rose up and reversed the original flow of the river
