Reflection for Unit 2 Date: April 10, 2007 Concepts Discussed: Socialization Competition In class we discussed two topics, socialization and competition, that were essential in my upbringing as well as the upbringing of many others. Socialization helped to form the person I am today, and competition is something I was introduced to early on and often, and is something I continue to embrace more than I realized ever before. Socialization is the active process of learning and social development that occurs as we interact with one another in our social world. Through socialization, when I was younger and as I’ve grown, I have formed ideas about who I am and what is important to me. A large part of my socialization as a child came through competition, which is a social process that occurs when rewards are given to people on the basis of how their performance compares with others doing the same task. In relation to socialization, we explored two main approaches: the functionalist approach and the conflict theory approach. The functionalist approach to socialization says that
