The interchange of thoughts or opinions through shared symbols Be able to articulate what we mean by creation of meaning, symbolic nature of communication, that communication is a process, that communication is functional, systematic, interactional and transactional. Communication- the interchange of thoughts or opinions through shared symbols. Communication is: both verbal and nonverbal, symbolic, a process, functional, systemic, interaction, and transactional Transactional- a dynamic process that the participants create through their interactions ex) one cant be a leader without others willing to follow Definition & Elements of Interpersonal Communication Quantitative definition- approach that defines interpersonal com. As any interaction between two people (dyad) Qualitative definition- approach interpersonal com. Occurs when people treat 1 another as unique individuals regarless of the number of people and the context in which it occurs Elements Uniqueness, irrepaceability (can’t be replaced) Interdependence ( relationship is connected) Disclosure What needs are met via communication and how? Physical- more com in ones life the better their physical health Identity Needs- we learn who we are Social- principle way relationships are created Practical- communication is a tool to function throughout life What is meant by the statement “Meanings are in people, not in words”?
