Justin Gardner Ragged Dick Eng 101 2/9/08 Upon reading the passage Ragged Dick, I enjoyed it very much. I think that it just goes to show that everyday hard work and a little luck can change your life. Dick had an honest job as a boot-black, but didn’t make very much money at it. I think that when he jumped into the water after the little boy was a courageous and selfless act. I think that Dick deserved the rewards he received from Mr. Rockwell and he accepted them graciously. Also, I’m glad to see that Dick helped out his friend Fosdick and that they were able to move into a new home. I think it just shows that if you work hard all your life something good will come your way. Horatio Alger I think that that the passage Horatio Alger is one of truths and myths. I for one am not at all racist nor do I judge anyone on anything other than the kind of person they are. I think that the passage does bring up some disturbing truths into how some people feel about others because of race, religion, or culture. It is sad to see, but it is the truths we face.
