Justin Gardner Eng. 101 2/1/08 What We Really Miss About the 1950’s In the passage “What We Really Miss About the 1950’s”, author Stephanie Coontz says that the 1950’s were the decade for the ideal American family. Many polls taken reveal that the 1950’s were the best time to raise children and start a family. These times were free of all the violent movies and video games. I agree that this time was good. Nowadays, there are violent programs and video games that influence kids in every way. However I do not think that it is impossible to raise children today. I was raised in the 90’s and violent programs were out and I think I turned out ok. I would have to agree that most of the ideal families on television are set in the older times. It Takes a Family In the passage “It Takes a Family”, author Rick Santorum says that the dream of the ideal American family should be the norm for people to achieve. The government and political parties should support this dream and help it strive to become a reality. Two-

According to studies, Santorum points out those broken homes can increase the rate of delinquency in a community by 15%! I believe thats where the role of a father comes into play. My Dad was strict and I knew what I could get away with and what I could not, but it helped me realize that in the real world there are consequences for my actions. I believe that the absence of a male role model in a childs life is a huge problem. Nowadays, in cases of divorce and child custody it seems that fathers get the short end of the stick. Santorum says Ive met my share of fatherhood-rights groups, so I know that the divorce courts are not often kind to fathers. I totally agree with the idea of fatherhood-rights groups and that they should have a bigger role in their childrens lives. I could not imagine what it would be like to be shunned from my Childs life, because of a court order....
