-1Justin Gardner Eng 101 3/13/08 How the Americans Understand the Equality of the Sexes In the passage, “How the Americans Understand the Equality of the Sexes”, the author Alexis de Tocqueville addresses the problem of differences between men and women. He states that hopefully in the future we will be beings of equal traits. This would pose a giant problem in the future. I think that if we were equal beings then problems of epic proportions would arise. In this society there must be someone better skilled or better qualified to do a certain thing. For example, in the sports world if two players at the same position had equal skill and equal traits, then neither would be the dominant player in their field. I think that having someone better than you helps you strive and work harder towards your goals. Becoming Members of society In the passage, “Becoming Members of Society”, author Aaron H. Devor says that rules of gender are learned at an early age and are the product of socialization. Many
