Section 1: Cloud computing 1. What is cloud computing? What are the essential characteristics of cloud computing? -Model for enabling on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (servers, storage, and apps) that can be rapidly provisioned with minimal service provider interaction EX: Email -cloud is used as a metaphor for a set of resource infrastructures accessible over the internet -Essential characteristics -replacing computing resources with services provided over the internet -Measured service-resource usage can be measured, monitored, controlled, optimized in order to provide transparency for both user and provider -Scalability- Resource can be rapidly and elastically provisioned to scale out when needed - Resource pooling -Multi tenancy model- the resource is dynamically assigned according to customer needs -Location Independence- Little or no control over location of hardware -On Demand access- a consumer can be provided with computer access w/o human interaction with provider as long as they have internet connection -Broad network access 2. What is IaaS? For this service model, what are the resources the cloud vendor will provide/manage and what are the resources the cloud user will have a control? What basic question is it essentially addressing for a cloud user? Know that Amazon is the pioneer to officially offer IaaS to the public and Rackspace is also gaining an increasing market share of IaaS. -IaaS: Infrastructure as a Service (computing, storage, and networking resource) that is allocated and made available over the internet and paid for based on resources used. An alternative to buying own physical hardware. -User controls APP and OS(deploy and run software), but the cloud company provides the Hardware (processing, storage, networks) -”I need a Server” - Ex: Netflix on Amazon web services (for flexible streaming ability=scalability)
