Jordan Lofgren ENGW 1101 Intro to Creative Writing TA: Patrick Hueller Response to Sun Yung Shin Sun Yung Shin was full of advice about how sounds are very important to poetry. First off, Shin said that poetry is music—sound carried by language made by the human voice. This puts a very interesting spin on poetry. Free verse poems are a lot like hip-hop lyrics when you think about it. Both include lines full of words. They also have a rhythmic feel to them. Hip-hop is a genre of music, and if it is so closely related to free verse, then free verse to an extant would be considered highly musical. Another piece of advice that Shin gave was that sound has its own meaning, and in poetry, it makes meaning. She said that sounds help build on the words. They are often multiple, contradictory, associative, or separate from the meanings of the other words. Sounds help describe the feeling in depth. If there are just words on the sheet, the audience only has those words to try to get what the author is saying. When you add in
