Matt Benedict Cultural Critique Drugs in Small Town America There are nearly 15 million active drug users (Biden) in this country today, and it is a common misconception that they all live in big cities like new York, Miami, and Los Angeles. However, the harsh reality is that they are ruining small town America as well. A recent report found that on average, eighth graders in rural America are 104 percent more likely than their peers in cities to use amphetamines; 83 percent more likely to use crack cocaine; 50 percent more likely to use powder cocaine; and 34 percent more likely to smoke marijuana(Biden). It’s vital in my eyes then, that Americans need to stop being so naïve about these places because a drug problem does exist. These rural places are often in poverty and our situation will only continue to worsen unless some attention is brought to it. The media should have some responsibility in illuminating these problems of small towns to the masses. A recent 60 Minutes episode on CBS did just that telling the
