Scientific, legal and sociological evidence supports the justifications for the use of slavery Negroes at the time were considered to have the brain of a white child and were physically inferior to the white man. Thus, they needed to be supervised and governed by whites. Dr. Samuel A. Cartwright said “The excess of organic matter, the deficiency of the cerebral- the predominance of the humors over the red blood, from defective atmostperhization of the blood in the lungs, impart to the Negro a nature not unlike that of a new born infant of the white race”(160) He suggests this theory of Negroes must be governed by a better race such as whites. He argued that Negroes are better suited and biologically better for doing manual labor. “The field of vision is not so large in the Negro’s eye as in the white man’s. He bears the rays of sun better because he is provided with an anatomical peculiarity in the inner canthus, contracting the field of vision and excluding the sun’s ray” (159) “Under the compulsive power of the white man, they are
