CH 14: HEALTH, STRESS, AND COPING I. Health Psychology try to understand how people get sick, how they react to illness, why some sick some healthy. Many diseases have psychological components; happier, more healthy. a. Leading causes of death and lifestyle II. Stress and Illness a. Stress plays a major role in illness, a negative emotional state in which we feel that expect played upon us exceeds our response capability. It depends on personality and situation. b. The Stress Response: General Adaptation Syndrome: body reaction i. Alarm reaction 1. Sympathetic nervous system activation 2. Adrenal glands – adrenalin, noradrenalin, corticosteroids ii. Resistance stage iii. Exhaustion bodies worn out. Energy stored have been depleted 1. Diseases of adaptation Can affect cardio vascular system c. Stressful Life Events i. Catastrophic events: big events natural disasters ii. Life changes and strains: major events in a person’s life. Divorce, moving iii. Daily hassles and chronic stressors: standing in line, daily irritating annoying little things d. Psychological Responses to Stress more irritable i. Emotional changes ii. Cognitive changes 1. ruminative thinking 2. catastrophizing iii. Behavioral stress responses aggressive responses
