Chapter 7: Sexual Disorders What makes sexual behavior a psychological disorder? 4 It causes harm to other people 5 It causes an individual to experience persistent or recurrent distress or impairment in important areas of functioning. Paraphilias: Disorders in which an individual has recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving nonhuman objects, children or other nonconsenting persons, or the suffering or humiliation of oneself or a partner. 6 Pedophilia: a paraphilia in which an adult has uncontrollable sexual urges toward sexually immature children. 7 Exhibitionism: person has intense sexual urges and arousing fantasies involving genital exposure to strangers. 8 Fetishism: person is preoccupied with an object & becomes dependent on this object for achieving sexual gratification, actually preferring it over sexual intimacy with a partner. 9 Frotterurism: Masturbation that involves rubbing against another person.
