EMUS 3822: MUSIC LITERATURE I Fall 2007 Ross Hagen N140 Imig Music Building Course Times: MWF 12:00-12:50 PM, N1B59 Office Hours: Tuesday 11:00-11:50 AM, Wednesday 1:00-1:50 PM, and by appointment Purpose of the Course: Music Literature I is designed to enhance your understanding of and appreciation for music, specifically that of the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods. As we move chronologically through the canon of Western classical music, we will also be honing our listening skills in order to learn to speak intelligently about the great music of the past, as well as the music we hear around us each day. Text: Joseph Machlis and Kristine Forney, The Enjoyment of Music, 10 th Edition, 2007. Required The Norton Recordings, 10 th Edition , Volume 1: Gregorian Chant to Beethoven, 2007. Available at the bookstore and on reserve in music library. Various online resources are available as well. Grades: 500 point total Exams 225 possible points Journal/Quizzes/Teaching Project 225 possible points Participation 50 possible points Exams: There will be three exams throughout the semester at the end of each large section. Concepts we continually discuss will recur as test material, but the exams will not be cumulative in terms of specific historical facts or pieces from previous sections. Assignments: Listening Journal : As we learn to become active listeners, you will be asked on several occasions to keep track of all of the music you encounter during a certain period of time and reflect on what you have heard. You will also be able to continually submit shorter journal entries as messages on CULearn while you continue to listen to music. These later submissions are up to you to add as you are
