Weekly Quiz February 10, 2006 CHEM 231 Spring 2006 1. Give the products for the acid base reaction between phenol (PhOH) and OH - and NH 2 - . Which side does the equilibrium tend toward? Which reaction is more productive? Which base is stronger? The reaction in each case tends to the right, more so for –NH 2. This is b/c -NH 2 is a stronger base. OH + OH O + H 2 O ACID pKa=10 CONJ ACID pKa=15.5 OH + NH 2 O + NH 3 ACID pKa=10 CONJ ACID pKa=36 2. In each pair, which base is stronger? Why? a. CH 3 OH v. NH 3 NH 3 is a stronger base. You can look up the pKa of the conjugate acids for CH 3 OH and NH 3 . NH 4 + is a weaker acid, therefore dissociates to give you a stronger base. b. NaSH v. NaNH 2 These are both salts—you are really looking at SH compared with NH 2 . If you look up the conjugate acids (H 2 S) and NH 3 you’ll find NH 3 is a weaker acid and therefore dissociates to give you a stronger base.
