Passion Narratives Guide 1. In Matthew and Mark, the anointing takes place two days before the passover in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper. The woman is described only as a woman with an alabaster box. She anoints Jesus by pouring the oil on his head. In Matthew, the disciples are the ones who rebuked the woman while in Mark it simply says "some people there." Both gospels record Jesus saying to his disciples, "Why do you trouble the woman? She has performed a good service to me. By pouring this ointment on my body, she has prepared me for burial." John records that the anointing happened six days before the passover in Bethany at the house of Lazarus. The woman in this story is Mary the sister of Lazarus and she anoints Jesus's feet and then wipes them with her hair. Only Judas is noted as rebuking the woman in John. One way John parallels the synoptics is in what he records Jesus saying about the woman. Luke didn't record the anointing in his gospel. This is probably because of Luke's directed audience being gentiles who wouldn't find the use of the oil and anointing as significant. 2. In the synoptics, the preparation for the Passover on the first day of unleavened bread. Mark and Luke are the two books that mention the man carrying the jar. Matthew does not. This is probably because Matthew's gospel is very Jewish and carrying a jar was considered a woman's job in the Jewish culture and would have been out of the norm for
