Discussion: 2: The Value of Research in Social Policy Marc Boykins SOC 333 Research Methods Elaine Alden Instructor May 26, 2016 The City of San Francisco is currently using crime data to increase the awareness and to inspire people with the power and insight that data brings, to a particular community (Rosling, 2009). Furthermore, the crime data is being used to acknowledge and spot high and low crime areas in the City of San Francisco. Crime spotting maps also show statistical analysis that could help in spotting and avoid areas with high crime rate. The police department has created a crime spotting map that allows individuals to view the relationship between topography and crime in their particular region (Rosling, 2009). This measuring instrument does not only make the public aware, but it also lets law enforcement know how and where to conduct business in communities with high crime rates. The crime areas are distinguished by color and labeled with the particular crime. The police department obtains this analysis by the number of 911 calls within the particular region along with the number of police reports. The data could be used by citizens to influence policy because it is making them more aware of areas that have high degrees of crime rates. It also allows them to analyze and visualize San Francisco crime data (Rosling, 2009).

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
