Title: Mystery Continues: Microbes not from NPIP! Introduction/Hypothesis: Extraterrestrial Landing Vehicle Integrated Sampler (ELVIS) was developed by NASA to gather samples from extraterrestrial environments. ELVIS maintains these samples in their normal atmospheric and temperature conditions. ELVIS is fitted with a suit made to resemble the music legend Elvis Presley, made of polyurethane. For its latest exploration mission, ELVIS was sent to Nearby Previously Invisible Planet (NPIP). When ELVIS returned, it was seen that its coat was degraded into a large puddle. Scientists gathered a sample of this degraded polyurethane and sent it to the lab to be examined. We examined this sample for any possible microbes that may have contributed to this degradation. It is possible that ELVIS was contaminated by extraterrestrial microbes that led to its degradation. Our hypothesis is that samples from the ELVIS probe contain bacteria native to NPIP and these bacteria cannot be identified as related to earthly bacteria. Phenotypic results: Isolate D: Sequence 1 Microorganism coded “D” has been isolated and analyzed in lab. This microbe formed small circular colonies on TSA. Using Gram stain, it can be seen that this organism is coccus shaped and Gram positive, as they stained purple (Fig. 1-1 ). They do not form endospores, as they stained only pink with the endospore stain. By using motility stab, it can be seen that they are not motile because they grew only where the agar was stabbed (Fig. 1-2). When streaked and incubated on blood agar, there was a clearing around growth, indicating beta hemolysis. “D” did not grow on MacConkey because it is Gram positive. When incubated in four different temperatures, they only grew in 30 degrees Celsius, indicating that they are mesophiles. “D” is salt intolerant, as demonstrated by lack of growth on agar with salt concentrations. They cannot grow on minimal media with glucose because they cannot use glucose as the
