New South Only place where Americans have ever been defeated. Difficult to define who is an American who is a southerner. Majority of African Americans lived in the South. Most stayed there after the war. 1870s and on, racial intermingling will be more common in the South. White Southerners will try to prevent that. New South according to Henry Grady in 1886: 1. US no longer 2 separate nations; southerners had erased the Mason-Dixon Line. 2. Southern economy had changed; industrialization replaced plantation agriculture 3. Blacks were now partners in the New South By the 1880s, the South had created one of the best railroad systems in the world from federal money. South became dependent on Northern money. State that cotton plantations cannot be relied on enough. Richard H. Edmonds: editor of The Manufacturers’ Record -Wants to encourage the North and foreign investors to help build industries. -A farm-to-factory movement.
