Chem 2261 Course Notes Alkynes (see Bruice, Chapter 6) 1 Nomenclature of Alkynes The IUPAC name of an alkyne is obtained by replacing the "ane" ending of the alkane with "yne." Some of the smaller alkynes frequently referred to by their common names. Rules for Naming Alkynes (see p. 260-262) 1. Determine the parent name by selecting the longest chain that contains the triple bond and changing the ending of the name of the alkane of identical length from -ane to -yne (e.g., pentane becomes pentyne). 2. Begin numbering at the end nearer the triple bond. 3. Indicate the locations of the substituent groups by the numbers of the carbon atoms to which they are attached. CC H CH 2 H 3 C H 3 C CH 3 H 3 CCH CH 2 CH 2 C C CH 2 CH 3 CH 3 1-butyne 2-butyne 7-methyl-3-octyne 4. Name compounds containing both an alkene and an alkyne as "enynes" and begin numbering at the end nearer the closest multiple bond (alkene or alkyne). If the numbering scheme would produce two names in which the lower number could go to either the "ene" or "yne", the "ene" gets it. H 3 CH CH 2 C CH CH 3 H 3 CH CH 2 C C CH 3 CH 3 5-methyl-4-hexen-1-yne 2-methyl-2-hepten-4-yne Other rules are analogous to those for substituted alkanes (see Chapter 2).
