Sociology 09.24.2007 Culture • Values, Norms, Roles Role Strain Role Conflict Anomie • Technology Reflects values we hold Ex. Cell phone valuing freedom, autonomy, mobility iPod Computer: efficiency Internet: Education We must talk about culture in terms of change because it is not stagnant. • We can talk about internal causes of change. Ex. A change in the structure of the economy from manufacture to information has changed norms concerning husbands and wives. Greater value on material resources. • There are external causes of change. Contact with external cultures–cultural diffusion occurs. * Globalization Standardization-corporatations going international Increased Cultural Diversity due to resurgence of local cultures & spread of culture to different parts of the world Subculture • A subgroup that is different from but not necessarily in opposition to the dominant culture Ex. Music Sub Culture Counterculture • A group that has values in opposition to the dominant culture
