Jonathan Morris History 2057 Feb. 26, 2008 I. Opposition to immigration a. Most immigrants were in northwest b. Growing concern of people not western European descent c. Efforts are made to try and limit immigration d. Huge political battle; can the union survive with all these people e. Most efforts to limit immigration were not successful f. one legislation was made to keep people from China from immigrating g. they started to rely on these immigrates for cheap labor II. Race relations lack in the South a. Status of blacks after Reconstruction i. Black men continued to have political power; some even in Congress ii. There is a white backlash against blacks in the South; so participation for blacks is reduced iii. Literacy rates went up for blacks, life expectancy increased; black started to form a middle class iv. Progress begins to slow or even stop with the Jim Crowe Laws b. New Racial system i. Disfranchisement 1. Voting rights are taken away from black men 2. In tricky ways because of 15 th amendment 3. Each state would come up with qualification to be able to vote 4. Such as property requirement, poll tax had to be kept up-to-date; had to pay for every year u missed 5. Had to live in voting district for at least a year before being able to vote 6. Hard for blacks because they were sharecroppers and moved around a lot. 7. Some states had literacy exams to be able to vote 8. Some of these qualification hurt the white population as well
