Reconstruction (1865-1877) Antebellum/ Post-bellum -Roughly 633,000 dead Population of Atlanta (2008): 520,000 Population of Athens (2008): 111,500 -Total population of US was at 15 million - 2008 statistics: US population: 305,000,000 GA population: 9+ million AL population: 45+ million -Reconstruction was a process not an answer to the question: “What now (after the war)?” * It was the state’s right to continue slavery = started the Civil War Antietam: September 17, 1862 -Bloodiest single day in American History -Funerals and embalming started because families wanted their loved ones home -Cities were devastated- became a characteristic of the South -Sherman (most known for Sherman’s march to sea) became most hated in the South He understood the war and used the ‘March to Sea’ as an effort to destroy everything and “break the South’s back.” -Sherman felt the need to destroy transportation (railroads) -Sherman’s soldiers built fires along the railroad consisting of railroad tracks and wood. Bent the tracks while hot then cooled and could not be straightened out again (unusable).
-First telegraph ran from the East Coast to the West Coast- sent in Morse Code- took skill, practice and money to send telegraphs Emancipation- -Slave masters did not receive financial compensation when the Emancipation Proclamation took effect -Slaves were uncompensated for their labor-they received nothing but freedom Slavery- “The Peculiar Institution” -Only ¼ of white Southerners owned slaves Large class distinctions: - 3000 people in the South in 1860 owned 100+ slaves - Less than 1% of white Southerners Typical slave owner had 1 or 2 slaves- at most a family 330,000 slave owners- 4 million slaves Means that a typical slave lived on a large plantation -Vast majority of Southerners DID NOT own slaves Then why did most Southerners support slavery? Hope of rising in status- UPWARD MOBILITY Slaves were the bottom ring of the socio-economic ladder -Gave even the poorest whites someone to look down upon -Slavery is a system of forced labor based on RACE
