Amber Warner ENG 366 Kristina McBean 2.2.16 Miss Spider’s ABC Miss Spider’s ABC is a book both written and illustrated by David Kirk. The picture book features Miss Spider, who has an upcoming birthday and all of her insect friends who are helping plan Miss Spider a surprise party. The book is an educational picture book that features vibrant imagery and a creative way to teach children the alphabet. The theme presented in this book is an educational one. Each page and insect is intended to teach a child a letter and to associate that letter with this picture. Many picture books have this intention, but the Miss Spider books are uniquely their own with lively paintings. The objective of combining these images with something as simple as the alphabet is that it will make the content more interesting and memorable to the child. The book starts out with the letter “A” and goes in chronological order until the surprise party is finally revealed to Miss Spider at the end of the story. As a child, it’s also supposed to be a surprise to the reader that a party was being planned the whole time. While many of the images hint at party preparations, none of them say it outright. For instance, one of the pages says, “Bumblebees blow balloons” while
