Unformatted text preview: The Pond Ecosystem- Ecology- is the study of interrelationships between living species and their physical environment. o The environment is made up of two kinds of factors Biotic- living components Abiotic- nonliving components (temp, light, water, oxygen, availability of nutrients)- Niche- total utilization of biotic and abiotic resources- Populations- all the members of a given species that live in a particular location- Community- More than one population in the same place.- Ecosystems- the level of ecological study that includes the entire community along with its physical environment. ENERGY FLOW I N AN ECOSYSTEM- The source of all energy in an ecosystem is the sun- Autotrophs- capture a small portion of the suns energy and use it to manufacture all the organic nutrients for an ecosystem. o A.k.a. primary producers o Aquatic systems- phytoplankton (diatoms, dinoflagellates, green algae)- Primary productivity is expressed as the rate that energy is stored as organic matter.
