1 1 • Exam #2 next Tuesday evening. I will detail the content at the start of Wednesday’s lecture. • CAPA for this week is available. • Note that this CAPA and the topic Magnetism is included on the Exam #2 next Tuesday evening. • Professor Kapteyn’s office hours on Thursday/Friday are cancelled this week. • Professor Nagle will announce extra hours on Thursday and Friday… • Please register your iClicker before the exam. 2 Magnetism! 3 So far we have studied two forces: gravity and electricity Magnetism is a new force, but also related to electric charges. Gravity is made by mass and gravity acts on masses. Electric fields are made by electric charges And Electric fields exert forces on charges. r r kQ E ˆ 2 = v E q F E v v = 4 There is a different kind of field, called a magnetic field, or B-field B v B-fields are created by moving charges (currents). B-fields exert a force on moving charges . This is very different from our previously studied forces! 5 No magnetic monopoles have ever been found. Thus, we do not consider them in classes.
